Cancer Coach Joanna Giangardella’s Journey of Resilience and Hope
Oct 17, 2024
In this episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the pleasure of speaking with Joanna Giangardella, an author, artist, and cancer coach whose life is a testament to resilience, creativity, and hope. From her childhood in Greece to her work supporting cancer patients, Joanna’s story is one of triumph over adversity and a deep commitment to helping others.
From Greece to the United States: A Story of Strength
Joanna’s journey began in Greece, where her family owned a vineyard and olive orchard overlooking the Aegean Sea. Her idyllic childhood was disrupted by the Greek Civil War and personal tragedy, leading to her relocation to the United States under heartbreaking circumstances.
"I was separated from my family at a young age, but I never forgot where I came from," Joanna shared.
Her determination to reconnect with her roots eventually led her to find her biological family, a reunion that was nothing short of miraculous.
Writing as Healing: The Girl from the Tower
Joanna chronicled her early life in her book, The Girl from the Tower: A Journey of Lies, which explores her separation from her family, the challenges she faced, and her eventual reunion. Writing this book was a cathartic experience, and the second edition answers the many questions readers had about her remarkable story.
"I wrote this book not only for myself but to help others find their families and understand their journeys," Joanna explained.
Dancing with Hope: Beating Stage 4 Cancer
Diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 cancer, Joanna defied the odds and went into remission after just three chemotherapy sessions. She attributes her recovery to a combination of aggressive treatment, a positive mindset, and lifestyle changes, including juicing, supplements, and a focus on Mediterranean-inspired nutrition.
"Cancer doesn’t have to be a death sentence. I wanted my story to give others hope," she said.
Her book, Dancing Skeleton: A Journey Through Stage 4 Cancer, documents her battle and recovery, offering inspiration to others facing similar challenges.
A Mission to Help Others: Coaching and Advocacy
Joanna is now a certified cancer coach, working closely with patients to support their nutrition, mindset, and recovery. She collaborates with nonprofit organizations like Cancer Kinship to provide financial and emotional support to those in need.
"My goal is to give people the tools and hope they need to navigate their journey," Joanna shared.
What’s Next: A Mediterranean-Inspired Cookbook
Joanna is currently working on her latest project: Kill Cancer’s Ass: A Cookbook. Drawing on her Greek heritage and her health journey, this book will feature recipes rooted in the Mediterranean diet, designed to nourish the body and soul.
"The Mediterranean diet is not just healthy; it’s delicious. I want to share recipes that make healthy eating enjoyable," she said.
Closing Thoughts: A Toast to Resilience and Connection
From reconnecting with her family to supporting cancer patients and sharing her culinary heritage, Joanna’s journey is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
