Situated on a picturesque 26-acre ranch, LaVie offers breathtaking hilltop views and a tranquil escape off the beaten path. Kara’s commitment to crafting exceptional wines and providing a warm, inviting atmosphere has made LaVie a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

The Art and Science of Wine

Unlike many winery owners, Kara chose not to grow her own grapes or make her own wine. Instead, she collaborates with skilled winemakers across Texas, sourcing grapes from regions like the High Plains.

"I didn’t want to just put my label on someone else’s wine. I wanted to be part of the process—learning, crafting, and creating a product I’m proud of," she explained.

Kara’s wines reflect her love for unique and food-friendly varietals, such as Mourvèdre, Trebbiano, and Tannat. She’s especially proud of her Picardan, a rare grape that pairs beautifully with flavorful, savory dishes.

"If I can’t pair the wine and drink the whole bottle, it doesn’t get my label," Kara joked.

Creating Experiences Beyond Wine

LaVie is more than a winery—it’s a community hub. From live music and chef-driven dinners to thoughtfully paired wine tastings, Kara focuses on crafting experiences that bring people together.

Her popular locals’ night, held the first Wednesday of each month, has become a cherished event in the area.

"It’s about creating community. Many people have made lifelong friends here over a glass of wine," Kara shared.

Kara also collaborates with chefs, musicians, and other local businesses to bring fresh and exciting events to her guests, including wine dinners at local restaurants and family-style seating arrangements that encourage connection.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Aspiring Winery Owners

Owning a winery isn’t all sunsets and sipping—Kara is quick to highlight the hard work involved. From maintaining a 26-acre ranch to managing the complexities of hospitality and retail, she emphasizes the importance of doing your homework.

"There are many ways to be involved in the wine business without taking on everything. Find what aligns with your strengths, whether it’s farming, winemaking, or hospitality," Kara advised.

Her biggest takeaway? Collaboration and adaptability are key. Kara’s willingness to work with others and embrace the uniqueness of each vintage has been vital to her success.
