From a love of running to a passion for making a difference, Heather Kalous’s story is one of determination, resilience, and heart. Whether she’s lacing up for a marathon, mentoring high school students, or raising awareness for ovarian cancer through Team Teal, Heather inspires those around her to embrace life with purpose and joy. Here’s a closer look at her incredible journey.

From the Track to the Classroom

Heather’s passion for running began in high school and carried through to her time at Iowa State University, where she competed in track and field as a middle-distance runner. While her running days were competitive then, she now enjoys it as a way to stay active and grounded.

As a long-time physical education teacher and former track coach, Heather uses her experience to instill values of teamwork, resilience, and perseverance in her students.

"I think every kid should learn two things: how to read and how to be a good human being. Everything else will follow," she shared with conviction.

Running with Team Teal

Heather’s connection to running took on a deeper meaning in 2019 when her mother was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. This life-altering event motivated her to join Team Teal, an initiative by the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC). Through marathons and other races, Heather raises funds and awareness for ovarian cancer research, honoring her mother and supporting countless others affected by the disease.

"Running the New York City Marathon for Team Teal was one of the most emotional and rewarding experiences of my life. I’ll never forget the energy of the city and the people cheering us on," Heather reflected.

Making a Difference in the Community

Beyond her athletic achievements, Heather finds joy in building meaningful connections. As a high school teacher, she emphasizes the importance of leadership, compassion, and curiosity, often bringing these themes into her elective classes.

Heather also works to balance the serious with the lighthearted. She’s a strong advocate for staying active and finding ways to connect with others—whether through group fitness classes, marathons, or simply sharing a glass of wine and a laugh with friends.

"Life’s about balance. Do the things you love, stay curious, and keep learning," she advised.

Looking Ahead to New Goals

As Heather approaches her milestone 50th birthday, she’s contemplating new challenges, including another marathon. With her supportive running group by her side, she continues to push boundaries and find inspiration in the people and causes she supports.

"Turning 50 isn’t something to dread—it’s something to celebrate. Every year we get is a gift, and I’m ready to embrace whatever comes next," she said with enthusiasm.

Closing Thoughts: Heather’s journey is a powerful reminder that resilience, community, and a commitment to giving back can transform lives—not just our own, but also those of the people we touch. From teaching and coaching to running marathons for a cause, Heather exemplifies what it means to live with purpose and passion.
