Janica Smith, on the Secrets of Successful Self-Publishing

In this episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the pleasure of catching up with Janica Smith, a former Traveling Vineyard consultant turned publishing consultant. Janica’s journey is one of saying “yes” to new opportunities and building a business that empowers others to share their stories with the world. From helping over 150 authors bring their books to life to sharing her love of wine and connection, Janica’s story is filled with inspiration, practical advice, and a reminder to embrace possibilities when they come your way.

The Power of Saying Yes

Janica’s career took an unexpected turn when she read about the concept of virtual assistants in a Reader’s Digest article. At the time, she was an executive assistant working remotely for two vice presidents. The idea of building her own business intrigued her, and a chance lunch at a Traveling Vineyard convention sparked her entrepreneurial journey.

"Sometimes, you just have to stay open to opportunities and say yes when they come your way," Janica shared.

Her first clients included public speakers and authors, and before long, she transitioned into a niche supporting writers with their publishing journeys.

Empowering Authors to Own Their Stories

Janica’s work as a publishing consultant goes beyond editing and design. She specializes in helping authors retain control of their intellectual property by setting up their own publishing imprints.

"When you work with a traditional publisher, you often lose control over your content. I help authors maintain ownership and ensure their work aligns with their vision," she explained.

From coordinating editing and book design to navigating the complexities of print-on-demand platforms like KDP and IngramSpark, Janica provides comprehensive support to her clients, ensuring their books are professionally crafted and widely distributed.

Lessons in Resilience and Opportunity

Janica’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to the value of showing up and taking risks. One pivotal moment came when she attended a women’s networking convention in Dallas—despite being the only participant from a training cohort.

"Showing up gave me the chance to build meaningful connections and gain a mentor who changed the trajectory of my business," Janica said.

Her story underscores the importance of investing in yourself, stepping outside your comfort zone, and trusting the process.

Collaboration Over Competition

For aspiring authors, Janica emphasizes the importance of viewing other writers as collaborators rather than competitors. By building relationships within their niche, authors can create opportunities for cross-promotion and community building.

"There’s always room for another book or a fresh perspective. You never know who needs to hear your story in your voice," Janica said.

She encourages writers to connect with their peers, engage with their audiences, and lean into their unique strengths.

Life Beyond Publishing

Outside of her consulting work, Janica cherishes her love of wine and community. From hosting Bunko nights with friends to enjoying strawberry lemonade cocktails on a Texas porch, she knows how to savor life’s simple pleasures.

Her recent travels to Sonoma County and her enthusiasm for Wine Camp highlight her passion for connection and celebrating moments of joy with others.

"There’s something special about friendships made over wine. You can go years without seeing someone, but when you reconnect, it’s like no time has passed," Janica said.

Final Thoughts: The Legacy of Helping Others Shine

Janica has helped over 150 authors publish their books, creating a ripple effect of inspiration and knowledge. Whether it’s a retired park ranger sharing her adventures or an entrepreneur building credibility, Janica’s support allows writers to focus on their strengths while bringing their stories to life.

"I may not write books myself, but my legacy is helping others share their voices with the world. That’s what drives me," she said.
