In this episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the joy of sitting down with my niece, Kalli Fitzgerald—a passionate educator, instructional coach, and all-around amazing human. Kalli’s story is one of dedication to her students, fellow teachers, and her family. She shares her journey from classroom teaching to instructional coaching, how education has evolved, and how she navigated personal struggles that tested her strength and resilience.

If you’ve ever wondered what life looks like behind the scenes for teachers or how one woman turned challenges into growth, Kalli’s story is an inspiring reminder of the power of connection, collaboration, and perseverance.

From Farm Life to Teaching Life

Kalli grew up on a farm in Iowa and took her love of learning to Iowa State University, where she met her husband and eventually found her way into teaching. She started her career in fifth-grade classrooms, where her passion for helping students thrive became her focus.

"I loved working with small groups of kids, seeing where their struggles were, and helping them get to the next level. That piece—digging into the data and making a difference—was huge for me."

Over time, Kalli transitioned into an interventionist role, providing more targeted support to students, and eventually became an instructional coach. Now, she partners with teachers to refine their instruction, plan lessons, and find new strategies to engage students effectively.

The Role of an Instructional Coach

As an instructional coach, Kalli wears many hats—co-teaching, observing, offering feedback, and collaborating on lesson plans. Her days are full of variety, from working with kindergarteners to eighth graders and supporting teachers across subjects.

"What I love most is the variety and the relationships—with students and teachers. It’s about partnering with them, not telling them how to do their job, but working together to give kids the best experience possible."

Kalli emphasizes that teaching has changed dramatically, especially since the pandemic, and instructional coaching helps teachers adapt to new challenges while staying supported and connected.

Navigating Resistance and Embracing Change

Not every teacher is immediately open to instructional coaching. Kalli admits some resistance comes from veteran educators who have been doing things their way for decades.

"I think there’s a fear that someone is going to come in and tell them they’re doing it wrong. But really, it’s about collaboration. It’s about working together to make education even better for our kids."

Kalli’s empathetic approach helps her build trust and relationships, showing teachers that coaching is about growth, not criticism.

Education After COVID: Supporting Kids and Teachers

COVID-19 disrupted education in ways no one expected. From online instruction to returning to classrooms, teachers and students faced unprecedented challenges. Kalli shares how today’s students are different, particularly younger ones who missed critical social and academic milestones.

"Kids who were in preschool or kindergarten during COVID are struggling academically and socially. It’s a challenge, but teachers are rising to meet it, and we’re figuring it out together."

Facing Personal Challenges: Strength and Compassion

While excelling in her professional role, Kalli has faced her own share of hardships. She opens up about the grief of losing her brother to suicide and the challenges of having a premature baby during the height of COVID.

"Life hit me hard in my 30s. Growing up, I was so lucky—no big struggles, no loss. Then suddenly, I was navigating grief, fear, and uncertainty all at once."

Through it all, Kalli leaned on her family, her faith, and the mindset of dumping out, not in (offering support to those closest to the pain while finding her own outlets to process).

"My parents taught me so much about resilience. Watching them lean on each other reminded me that we can get through anything—together."

Her youngest daughter, Sawyer, born at just 31 weeks, is now a healthy, happy bundle of energy, bringing light and joy to the entire family.

Favorite Memories: Connection, Family, and Fun

Despite the challenges, Kalli finds joy in the little moments—especially with family. Whether it’s a game of cards, a Bloody Mary at a Fitzgerald family gathering, or just chatting over cocktails, Kalli cherishes those connections.

"I married into the best family. The Fitzgerald get-togethers are full of laughter, games, and traditions that we all look forward to every year."

Her go-to cocktail? A classic Jack and Coke—with the occasional Bloody Mary thrown in for good measure.

Advice for Teachers and Beyond

For teachers curious about instructional coaching or feeling overwhelmed in today’s classrooms, Kalli offers this advice:

  • Collaborate: Teaching is better when you don’t do it alone.

  • Ask for help: Your administration and support systems are there to lift you up.

  • Keep growing: Education evolves, and so should we. Embrace the change, even when it feels uncomfortable.

For anyone navigating life’s challenges, Kalli’s journey reminds us to lean on our support systems, stay compassionate, and find joy in the connections that ground us.

Final Cheers Kalli Fitzgerald’s story is a beautiful blend of resilience, passion, and joy. From empowering teachers and students to navigating personal hardships with grace, Kalli leads with heart and purpose. Her reminder to us all? Life is full of challenges, but it’s also full of connection, laughter, and growth.
