In this episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lori Stephens, the founder of Powerful Education Solutions. Lori’s journey from a young teacher with a passion for helping students to a dynamic advocate and educator is nothing short of inspiring. Her work focuses on empowering students, guiding families, and creating meaningful connections. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or someone looking to make a difference, Lori’s story will leave you uplifted and motivated.

A Teacher at Heart

Lori’s passion for teaching began in childhood, lining up her stuffed animals to play “school.” This natural inclination led her to pursue a career in education, with a focus on helping students with special needs.

"I’ve always gravitated toward kids who need extra help. It’s just who I am," Lori shared.

Her journey through the education system, both as a student and a teacher, gave her unique insights into the challenges and opportunities within public and private education.

The Birth of Powerful Education Solutions

After facing burnout in traditional education roles, Lori took a leap of faith and founded Powerful Education Solutions in 2011. Her mission: to advocate for students and families navigating the complexities of education.

Lori supports students with disabilities, helping them develop executive functioning skills, overcome learning challenges, and build confidence.

"For some students, I’m the one adult who gives them undivided attention each week. That can make all the difference," she explained.

LifeSkills Prep Camp: Building Resilience

Lori’s innovative LifeSkills Prep Camp focuses on teaching practical tools for personal and academic success. Using principles from the Eight to Great program by MK Mueller, the camp incorporates gratitude practices, problem-solving, and resilience-building activities.

"Seeing students use the skills we teach and thrive is what drives me," Lori said.

One of the camp’s most popular activities involves a simple potato and straw, demonstrating the power of belief and determination—a metaphor for achieving goals even when the odds seem stacked against you.

Advocacy and Connection: A Holistic Approach

Lori’s work goes beyond academics. She emphasizes the importance of emotional intelligence, communication, and energy exchange in relationships.

"Helping families understand how their interactions affect each other’s energy is key to creating harmony and progress," she explained.

Her unique approach combines education, advocacy, and life coaching to address the whole child, supporting both students and their families.

Finding Joy and Balance

When Lori isn’t working with students, she finds joy in nurturing her plants and spending time with her “MangoPaws Tribe,” a group of close girlfriends who provide laughter, connection, and support.

"Building a tribe of strong women has been one of the greatest blessings of my life," Lori shared.

Her favorite drink, a vodka cranberry, reflects her simple yet thoughtful approach to life: balancing practicality with a touch of sweetness.

Closing Thoughts: Advocating for Change

Lori’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, advocacy, and authentic connection. Her dedication to empowering students and families is creating lasting change, one life at a time.
