Nichole Richardson on Finding the Right Fit, Not Being Put in a "Box", and Military Service
May 16, 2024In this episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the honor of sitting down with Nichole Richardson—a woman of strength, determination, and humor. Nichole’s story is one of resilience, from her time serving in the Navy to navigating workplace challenges and embracing life’s unexpected twists. Her journey inspires us to break free from societal “shoulds” and make choices rooted in joy and self-empowerment.
A Life of Service and Adaptability
Nichole’s path has been anything but conventional. Her decision to join the Navy was sparked by a friend's suggestion, and she embraced the unknown with courage. Serving as a hospital corpsman, Nichole experienced the highs and lows of military life, including the physical and emotional challenges of balancing service with family responsibilities.
"I always tell my fiancé, 'I don’t need you—I choose you.' That choice is a reflection of my journey to live authentically and intentionally," Nichole shared.
Overcoming Workplace Adversity
After transitioning from the Navy, Nichole found herself in a series of challenging work environments, from demanding customer service roles to navigating toxic coworkers. However, her determination led her to a role that aligns with her strengths—working from home in data entry for an international credit reporting agency.
"I’ve learned to stand up for myself and find environments where I’m respected and valued. That’s a lesson I want others to take away," Nichole emphasized.
Choosing Joy and Breaking the “Shoulds”
Nichole’s upcoming Halloween-themed wedding exemplifies her belief in making life choices based on joy rather than societal expectations. From walking herself down the aisle to creating a unique masquerade ball, she’s crafting a day that reflects her and her fiancé’s personalities.
"I’m walking myself down the aisle because this time, it’s my choice. I choose him, and I choose this life," she explained.
Mental Health and Veteran Advocacy
Nichole also opened up about her experiences with mental health challenges, including the anxiety and panic attacks she faced during and after her military service. As a 30% disabled veteran, she advocates for recognizing the unseen struggles of service members.
"Just because you can’t see someone’s disability doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Mental health is health, and it deserves the same respect," she said.
The Power of Connection and Craftsmanship
A lover of craft beer and wine, Nichole finds joy in the stories behind every bottle. Whether it’s a family-run brewery or a vineyard with generations of history, she cherishes the art and science that go into creating something special.
"It’s not just about the drink—it’s about the story, the craftsmanship, and the connection," Nichole shared.
Closing Thoughts: You Make a Difference
Nichole’s message is one of empowerment: every role, no matter how small it may seem, makes a difference. From her time in the Navy to her current role and personal life, Nichole’s journey reminds us of the importance of resilience, authenticity, and joy.
"You’re not just doing anything—you’re making a difference. Choose joy, stand tall, and never underestimate your impact," Nichole concluded.
Cheers to breaking barriers and living life on your terms!
