Pistol Packin Paula: Champion Gun Twirler, Stuntwoman, and Author - Exclusive Interview
Jul 04, 2024
In this electrifying episode of Penny for Your Shots, I had the privilege of sitting down with Pistol Packin’ Paula, a two-time world champion pistol twirler, stuntwoman, educator, and all-around entertainer. From her humble beginnings in Connecticut to performing jaw-dropping stunts across the globe, Paula’s story is one of resilience, grit, and a passion for inspiring others to follow their dreams.
From Shy Beginnings to Center Stage
As a child, Paula never imagined performing in front of large audiences. A shy girl with a love for sports, she found her voice and confidence through community theater and eventually stunt school.
"I never thought I’d be a gun twirler, let alone a two-time world champion," Paula said.
Her journey began with learning the basics of stunts—falling off buildings, fire stunts, and more. It wasn’t until she saw men twirling guns during her Western-themed stunt training that Paula discovered her calling. Determined to prove herself in a male-dominated field, she worked tirelessly to master the craft.
Becoming Pistol Packin’ Paula
Paula’s big break came when she began performing at a theme park in Arizona, taking on roles like Annie Oakley and Calamity Jane. Her talents caught the attention of corporate event organizers, and her career blossomed into what it is today—a one-of-a-kind act blending precision, flair, and showmanship.
"I started with one gun and eventually moved on to two. Now, 33 years later, I’m still twirling, cracking bullwhips, and wowing audiences," she shared.
Challenges and Comebacks
In 2008, Paula faced a devastating accident that left her with a broken pelvis and ribs. Doctors doubted she’d ever perform again, but Paula’s determination proved them wrong. Just a year later, she won her second world championship.
"The accident was a turning point. It reminded me of the power of resilience and the importance of following your heart," she reflected.
A Mission to Inspire
Beyond entertaining, Paula has a mission to inspire children and young adults to dream big and persevere. Through her performances, books, and upcoming animation projects, she’s dedicated to encouraging the next generation to believe in themselves.
"I want kids to know they can achieve anything if they put their heart into it and keep trying," she said.
Her children’s coloring book and plans for an animated series featuring her beloved horses and dog showcase her commitment to creativity and storytelling.
Highlights and Memorable Moments
Paula has performed for celebrities, appeared on America’s Got Talent, and even showcased her skills internationally. One standout moment? Performing for Little House on the Prairie star Melissa Gilbert, who later told Paula she had “rocked her world.”
"It’s moments like these—when someone tells me I’ve made them smile or inspired them—that make everything worthwhile," Paula noted.
What’s Next for Paula
Paula’s next big show is at Wine Camp 2024 in Texas Hill Country, where she’ll bring her signature blend of entertainment to the stage during the September hoedown. Attendees can expect a thrilling performance featuring gun twirling, bullwhip tricks, and interactive elements.
A Few Fun Favorites
When she’s not performing, Paula enjoys relaxing with a glass of White Zinfandel or a perfectly made mojito. She also cherishes downtime by the campfire or poolside with friends, embracing the simpler joys in life.
"Sometimes it’s the quiet moments—sitting around a fire or enjoying a home-cooked meal—that recharge my spirit," she shared.
Closing Thoughts
Pistol Packin’ Paula’s journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of perseverance. Whether dazzling audiences with her stunts or inspiring kids to follow their dreams, Paula continues to shine as a beacon of determination and creativity.
